Funken Lodge

The Funken Lodge exceeded all our expectations. The room, whilst smallish, was well appointed and spotless. Breakfasts were comprehensive and super tasty. We also had the set menu for dinner which was exceptional! But it was the staff that made the visit especially memorable. They were ALL friendly, professional and attentive.

There’s history in the building itself and a very nice hotel overall with a great feel. The bar waiter we had for dinner at Funken Bar was relatively new working there but just an absolute star staffer… when we come back to Longyearbyen, there’s no other place we’ll stay! Love the nostalgic feel too to changing your shoes when you arrive - it’s also wonderful to know that most adhere to the rule, and the hotel is kept lovely and clean as a result throughout. Surprisingly good gym too!

This was a fantastic experience. I travel the world regularly for business, and on my holidays I prefer not to spend my time in a hotel. I made an exception in this occasion and I was very glad I did. The basics: the rooms were a good size, clean very comfortable and warm. The lounge areas were open, comfortable and inviting. You wanted to spend time in the lounge area instead of spending time in your room. The quality of food offered was very high - the breakfast was excellent, one of the best I’ve had at a hotel of this size, and the bar food was equally as good. What makes it excellent, in my opinion, are the staff. Just keep in mind how remote Longyearbyen is. It doesn’t appeal to everyone, therefore you would be forgiven for thinking that finding good staff would be difficult, not to mention retaining them during the dark season. Great staff are attentive, there when you need them, but never in your face. They seem to know what’s going on and give the impression they are on top of everything, but in that discreet way that is blended into the background. They seem happy in their roles, and that transfers to the guests, who are put at ease. We had no issues during our stay, but another couple told us of some issues they had with their activity bookings, and they recalled how impressed they were at the lengths the hotel staff went to in order to resolve the issue for them, mindful that the activity company wasn’t overtly connected with the hotel.

It’s hard to put into words how wonderful an experience we had here. The hotel is a fantastic juxtaposition with the conditions outside - after time in the cold, you are welcomed into warm and comfortable surroundings. You can then retreat to your warm and peaceful room, relax in the character-filled alcoves or experience some of the finest dining you’ll come across. All of this is supported by staff that give luxury service - patient, knowledgable and friendly.
